Deadwood movie development confirmed by HBO

Back in August, word came that a return trip to 1870s South Dakota was in the cards for the cast and crew of HBO’s unfairly-cancelled cult western series Deadwood. Now HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has confirmed to TVLine that series creator David Milch is all set for a Deadwood movie to hopefully wrap up all the loose ends.

“David has our commitment that we are going to do it,” says Lombardo. “He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change. But it’s going to happen. The understanding is that when he is done with [his current project] he will turn his attention to [writing the] script for the ‘Deadwood’ film.”

Once the cable network cancelled the show after a mere three 12-episode seasons, Milch’s original plan was to make two Deadwood movies and create a proper ending for the rivalry between Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and foul-mouthed pimp Al Swearengen (Ian McShane). Now it seems the only thing potentially standing in the way is Milch trying to corral all those busy actors back in the saddle.

“I’m going to leave that in David’s hands,” Lombardo said. “He’s confident he will be able to. The cast is unbelievably [tight]. Some casts and creators form a bond that becomes relevant for the rest of their lives. This was a defining moment for a lot of them.”

Art Bell quits… Again

Congratulations.  You lasted nearly five months this time.  Posted last night on his website….

I am sorry to have to announce this but I will not be on Tonight or any other night, yes I am going to hang it up. Whoever this crazy person is, they are not stopping and it has come to the point that we as a Family do not feel it is worth the risk. While I think the person or persons are after me, my Wife and now my Daughter are really scared, the other night after the latest incident my Daughter was off in the corner of her bed scared to death as the Police cars came screaming up. I will not put my Family through this. As you all know I dearly love what I do but not at the expense of never ending Terrorism. I want to thank those of you who have shown so much support and it has been my joy, short as it has been to have cracked that Mic open for a last time. This was a Family decision. The girls stuck with me and still would but if one of them were harmed because of what I love doing my life would be over.

In all fairness, I expected this for the first few days. The servers are usually flooded with new and returning players when a new expansion rolls out. In 24 hours, I’ve been able to successfully login for about thirty minutes.

Edit: It took longer than 143 minutes to get in the game; much longer. Give or take a few minutes, it took 11 1/2 hours to finally connect.

Luke. Leia. Han. Chewie. Artoo. Threepio. All present and accounted for as StarWars.com unveiled the official cast of “Star War: Episode VII” Tuesday.

Here’s the full release:

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

While original stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford had dropped hints that they would be reprising their roles for the new chapter, which takes place around 35 years after “Return of the Jedi,” nothing was confirmed until today. As expected, the trio will be joined by longtime castmates Kenny Baker (R2-D2), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Anthony Daniels (C-3PO, the only actor to appear in all six episodes to date).

New additions include Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, who recently appeared together in the Coen brothers’ 2013 folk music drama “Inside Llewyn Davis.” Also onboard: Andy Serkis (best known as Gollum in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy), Domhnall Gleeson (“About Time”) and the legendary Max von Sydow (“The Exorcist”). Fresh faces John Boyega (“Attack the Block”) and Daisy Ridley (who has appeared in just a handful of BBC dramas) round out the cast.

Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn confirmed last week that second unit filming has already been underway in remote locations like Abu Dhabi, but the principal cast will not start working in the UK until next month. That leaves them just 17 months for both production and post-production, which is ambitious considering the enormous scale of the project.

May the Force be with Abrams and his very talented cast.
